Gene Discovery Boosts Brain Cancer Research

Description: Researchers have discovered that a gene that triggers the growth of stem cells during early brain development is also key to the growth of deadly adult brain tumors called gliomas. The protein produced by the gene, called Olig2, "has both Jekyll and Hyde functions," said lead researcher Dr. David H. Rowitch, a professor of pediatrics and neurological surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, Children's Hospital.
